LuckyLand Slots Is Shutting Down September 14. If VGW Can Kill an 8-Year-Old Brand This Fast, Nothing in Sweepstakes-Casino Land Is Safe.

LuckyLand Slots is dead. September 14, to be exact. That’s the date VGW Holdings pulls the plug on an app that’s been printing sweepstakes coins for eight years.

Coin sales already stopped on August 3. Gameplay shuts off August 24. Whatever’s sitting in your account after that is on a countdown clock, and there’s no snooze button on it.

The part that should get your attention if you’ve got a balance: none of it moves. VGW also runs Chumba and High 5, and your LuckyLand coins aren’t walking across the hall to either one. Redeem before September 14 or the coins just stop existing. Casino.org reported the shutdown as VGW winding the brand down amid corporate turmoil and mounting state pushback. “State pushback” is doing a lot of quiet work in that sentence.

igaming.org confirmed the same closure date. But the real story here isn’t VGW’s balance sheet. It’s the two-year siege state attorneys general have been running on the entire sweepstakes-casino model.

Illinois hit 65-plus operators with cease-and-desist letters in May. New York’s Letitia James went after sweepstakes sites last summer. Tennessee did the same on December 29. Add it up and you’re at 130-plus cease-and-desist letters sent out across 2025 and 2026, aimed at a business that spent years insisting it wasn’t gambling because you technically can’t buy the coins that let you cash out real money.

You can. Everybody running these apps knew that.

Multiple states passed outright bans on sweepstakes casinos over the last year and a half. Even Chumba — VGW’s actual flagship, the platform LuckyLand was supposed to be the scrappy little sibling to — has gotten boxed out of state after state since 2024. When the flagship is taking on water, sinking the smaller boat isn’t a business decision. It’s triage.

Gambling law attorney Daniel Wallach put it plainly:

That tracks with everything else swirling around VGW right now: a founder who walked away earlier this year, a flagship getting squeezed state by state, and now an eight-year-old brand buried in six weeks flat. This site wrote about the reckoning coming for the gambling industry back in April. The sweepstakes corner of it is getting its turn now.

Don’t overreact and don’t get cute about it, either. If you’ve got coins sitting in LuckyLand, redeem them before September 14 and move on. Nobody’s losing a house here. This was always a casual, small-balance crowd. But treat this as the industry’s canary, not a one-off. VGW just proved a sweepstakes brand can go from “normal Tuesday” to “gone” inside six weeks. The attorneys general building this case for two years aren’t stopping at one app.
